Groceries

Welcome to our new service. Steve has always thought it would be great to show case Shetland produce and somehow offer it to our visitors. So here we are.

In the following pages you can select from a wide variety of Shetland's finest food and drink products, pay online, and we'll have the items waiting for you in your self-catering appartment when you arrive. Please note that we only use local produce direct from the following local suppliers.

This means you can browse these pages and see what to look out for when you get here. Even better, order online before you leave for Shetland and we shall have your 'groceries' waiting for you at your 'Shetland Home' when you arrive. We should point out however, that some of the products are seasonal, and may not be available, either for the duration of your visit or just when you arrive, in this case we will fully refund you for these items.

Shetland Farm Dairies

Shetland Farm Daires Ltd. was formed in 1994 when dairy farmers in Shetland bought the company after the previous owner, Kennerty, was taken over by Robert Wiseman Dairies. The six remaining dairy farms in Shetland today each have a share allocation equating to their individual quota holding and a seat on the Board of Directors. Daily collection from the farms ensures that milk is always fresh. Samples are taken from each farm, and at various points throughout processing to maintain a high standard of milk.

Walls Bakery

Walls Bakery was taken over by Charles and Angela Hodge in 1988. At that time the bakery was housed in an old, converted, church. Conditions were cramped and, as a consequence, the product range was limited. With the help of the local council, a new bakery was built in 1992, designed to the latest European hygiene standards. Product output and range subsequently increased. In 2004 a tea room and tourist information point was opened above the Bakery.

Valhalla Brewery

The Valhalla Brewery was opened in December 1997 by husband and wife team, Sonny and Sylvia Priest. The brewery is named after the hall in the celestial regions, home of the Norse god Odin, where slain Viking warriors were borne, to be revived by a horn full of ale. So there was no better choice of name for the brewery, as Shetland is steeped in Viking history. Guided tours are available at the brewery where they also bottle and label there bottles.

Burland Croft Trail

Tommy and Mary Isbister welcome you to their crofts at Trondra. We have been on our crofts since 1976, working and developing Burland in a traditional and environmental manner. Our main aim is to maintain native Shetland breeds of animals, poultry and crops. Our animals and poultry are very much "free range" where possible, and we believe this keeps them healthy and happy, reducing the risk of desease and corresponding medical intervention. All root and grain crops are grown by using organic manure produced on the croft. This traditional land management is much in tune with nature.
